The Wilmington Library offers a variety of materials, programs, online resources, and activities in the Children’s Room to support early literacy.
Early Literacy Fun Packs
Check out a themed backpack filled with books and activities targeting the five early literacy skills, Reading, Writing, Singing, Playing and Talking. Each backpack includes books, a music CD, a Magic Board, and toys related to a theme. An Activity Guide for the parent or caregiver is also included, which consists of activities, songs, and games that help support early literacy skills at home. The eight themes include Alphabet, Bears, Bedtime, Colors, Counting, Farm, Five Senses, and Shapes. The backpacks can be checked out for one week at a time and can be placed on hold by Wilmington patrons.
Activities in the Children’s Room
The children’s room contains lots of activities that develop the five early literacy skills, including a puppet theater, train set, puzzles, magic writing boards, an AWE Early Literacy Station and more.

Each year, the library sends a packet of information to all Wilmington families with new babies that includes information about the Grow a Reader program and a coupon for a free board book!
