Food for Thought

The oldest remote learning course is from 1728:

when Caleb Phillips placed an advertisement in the Boston Gazette seeking students eager to learn shorthand through weekly mailed lessons

Ok, that wasn’t Zoom but rather what’s called a Correspondence Course. Where lessons would be mailed and the answers mailed back. They still exist today.

A History of Correspondence Course Programs

And on a more relevant note, the oldest truly online course was in 1986 with the Electronic University Network. The EUN’s offering worked:

with DOS and Commodore 64 computers…students had to use proprietary software and communicate over phone lines.
