Apple Pie Bake-Off

For the third year in a row, the library is honoring Wilmington’s historic Baldwin apple by sponsoring an apple pie bake off.  Application forms will be available beginning mid-September.

Looking for new foods to grace your holiday table? This is your chance. Bring your favorite prepared holiday dish and recipe to share.  Attendees will have a chance to talk about their dish and exchange recipes and cooking tips with those in attendance. In addition, all will have the opportunity to taste what has been brought by others.  Your holiday menu will be complete!

House Series
Outhouses: outback or is this trip necessary?
Thursday, October 7, 1:00 p.m.
Self-billed “Outhouse Lady”, Virginia Williams, is on expert on outhouse architecture and history.   She has over 200 outhouse photos and has compiled a long list of affectionate nicknames for privies.  Come learn, reminisce, and be entertained.

Historical Houses: local history
Monday, October 18, 7:00 p.m.
Terry McDermott, Town Museum Curator, will share the stories behind some of Wilmington's historical homes including the Harnden Tavern, The Butters Farm, the Thomas Bond Estate and more.  Carolyn Harris, Chair of the Wilmington Historical Commission will speak about options for honoring historic homes such as placement on the National Register of Historic Places and the Wilmington Historical Commission's historic house plaque program. 

Haunted Lighthouses: New England lore
Monday, October 25, 7:00 p.m.
Jeremy D’Entremont will put you in the Halloween spirit by discussing the tales behind haunted New England lighthouses. Mr. D'Entremont has been called the leading expert on New England's historic lighthouses, writing seven books on the subject. He has appeared on the History Channel, the Travel Channel, Public Television, and National Public Radio speaking about his favorite subject.

Friends Fundraiser
Silhouette Portraits
Friday, November 12 and Saturday, November 13 by appointment
Jean Commerford, silhouette portrait artist, will be at the library to capture the image of those you love.  There is a cost for sitting and a cost for framing. Please check the library website for more details beginning early October.  Part of the proceeds will be donated to the Friends of the Library.

Music Programs
Italian Heritage Month
Ferdinando Argenti, Music and Vocals
Thursday, October 7, 7:00 p.m.
This performance is a fascinating voyage through Italian popular music and its' history, encompassing at one time more than a century of Italian popular songs, and drawing from different genres of music as diverse as opera, pop and jazz. On vocals and keyboards, Ferdinando Argenti will perform for you songs made famous by artists such as L. Pavarotti, L. Dalla, A. Bocelli, C. Baglioni, L. Battisti, A. Celentano, B. Martino, D. Mondugno, L. Tenco, F. DeAndre, and many others. Ferdinando is a native of Pisa, (Tuscany), Italy, and a graduate of Berklee College of Music. A professional jazz pianist, he has also studied singing with The Bel Canto Opera in Boston and performs all above mentioned genres throughout the Boston area and beyond. Program sponsored by the Sons of Italy.

The Senior Tones
Tuesday, November 2, 1:00 p.m.
Enjoy an afternoon of doo-wop sounds, oldies and some Louis Armstrong tunes.  The Senior Tones are a group of four friends who dress like the Blues Brothers with hats, cool shades, and crazy ties; they stand around a microphone and what comes next is magic.   This show is guaranteed to bring back memories for both young and old.

After Hours Concert featuring The Athene Wilson Quartet
Friday, December 3, 7:00 p.m.
Tickets $15, limit of 8; on sale to Friends of the Library Saturday, November 6; to the general public Monday, November 8; 21and older.
Athene Wilson is back for a second time to the delight of all, performing her signature Jazz, Gospel and R&B mix. Athene  is a familiar presence  in venues around Boston such as The House of Blues, Sculler's Jazz club and others. She has accompanied local artists including, Larry Watson, Andre Ward, Walter Beasley and several other bands.

For more information on story time sessions, check the Children’s Room page on the library’s web site. Please note that there will be no Story Times when Wilmington Public Schools are closed due to inclement weather.

Fall Story Times
Registration begins Monday, August 30  
Introduce your young child to books, flannel board stories, songs, circle games and finger plays offered by Children’s Librarians, Mrs. Barbara Michaud and Ms. Susan MacDonald at the following programs: Baby Times—a program most appropriate for the early walker with caregiver to be held on Thursdays, September 23, October 7 and 21 at 10:30-11 am.  Time for Twos—caregivers and two year-olds attend on Thursdays, September 16, 30 and October 14 at 10:30-11 am.  Story Times for Three Year-Olds—children who are three attend on either Tuesdays (September 14, 21, 28, October 5, 12) 9:30-10 am or Fridays (September 17, 24, October 1, 8, 15) 9:30-10 am.  Story Times for Four and Five Year-Olds—four year-olds and five year-olds (not yet attending kindergarten) attend on either Tuesdays (September 14, 21, 28, October 5, 12) 10:30-11 am or Fridays (September 17, 24, October 1, 8, 15) 10:30-11 am.  There will be no Story Times when Wilmington Public Schools are closed due to inclement weather.  Registration for the next Story Times sessions will begin Monday, October 18.

An Introduction to the College Admissions Essay

Join college admission consultant and former Ivy League admission officer Bill Caskey as he will reveal the biases of college admission officers, identify the essential ingredients to include in an essay, and specify the topics to avoid. This session is intended for high school students at all grade levels but particularly for juniors and seniors.
